Celebrating Achievements, Changing Stereotypes, Creating Leadership Capacities

Rising Beyond The Ceiling (RBTC) was born out of the need to change the stereotypical narrative about Muslim women in India. The hundred million Indian women, who identify themselves as Muslim, reach across a spectrum of ethnicities and languages, states, and union territories, do not look the same or sound the same, and contribute to nation building in a wide variety of ways.

RBTC celebrates the achievements, endeavor, and diversity of Muslim women in India aiming to drive a new narrative. We believe we ourselves must also work to put forward and build our own narrative. Through sharing the inspiring stories of the lived reality of Muslim women’s lives, in all their diversity, RBTC aims to dismantle their negative societal stereotypes. The hundreds of profiles of courage and excellence of Muslim women from states across India demonstrate how they have overcome and addressed the hierarchies of gender, class, and regional location. The stories also extrapolate conditions that facilitate success and can be overcome, making the path easier for the next generation of women. Through shining a light on the untold stories and celebrating the achievements of Muslim women in India, this initiative proposes to make them more visible and drive a new narrative. Chapters of this unique collective from several states of India are in the process of being identified and listed. Uttar Pradesh was the first chapter which was launched in December 2021. A global initiative, RBTC also has a ‘global inspirations’ compendium of Muslim women from India who are making their mark in countries across the world.

While the focus of Rising Beyond The Ceiling is on the journeys that were travelled by Muslim women achievers, the stories are envisaged to nurture confidence and ambition among all women and girls in India, and around the world, at every stage of their lives, in all areas of endeavor and open a door to new ambitions. The RBTC honorees also serve as mentors for the RBTC women’s mentorship programme which is open to young women 18 to 25 years of age from all faiths. For young women, seeing many other women of dramatically different backgrounds, achieving in a range of professions, is a strong signal that success and service come in many forms, and everyone gets to pick their own icons.

While she did not qualify for the direct MPSC examination for the post of Deputy Superintendent of Police, she went on to crack the sub-inspector exam. That too, in her first attempt! And she did not let her higher education take a backseat during the preparations for the exams and during training; she finished her MA during her training for the sub-inspector post and pursued and achieved an LLB after that.

CO-FOUNDER, MANAGING TRUSTEE OF PARCHAM (VOLUNTARY) 2013 – TO DATEParcham is an NGO working with the objective of breaking stereotypes, specifically religion and gender. In Mumbra, we attempt to create dialogue between Muslims and non Muslims through sports and other activities. Some achievements include: Formation of a football team of adolescent girls in a Muslim ghetto, documented in a movie ‘Under the Open Sky’ by School of Media and Cultural Studies, TISS; Successful advocacy resulting in reservation of a sports ground for girls in Mumbra by the Thane Municipal Corporation, the first such in Maharashtra; Introduction of Sports program in Public Schools in Mumbra; Founded the first and only children’s library in Mumbra
Sabah is a feminist activist whose interests are minority rights with a focus on women. She follows this passion through her voluntary engagements. She co-founded Parcham, a group dedicated to breaking stereotypes based on religion, class, caste, gender and other markers of difference to create a society respectful of diversity. Parcham is best known for introducing the football initiative for adolescent girls in Muslim ghettos.
She has been a member of the ‘Muslim Women’s Rights’ Network’, a group advocating the rights of Muslim women and Gender Just laws since 1999. As a member, Sabah was responsible for the formulation of the Progressive Nikahnama. She has a postgraduate degree in Social Work from Tata Institute of Social Sciences.
Muslim girls are always portrayed as victims and deemed to wear the burqa. We wanted to change that”, she argues.
.The COVID-19 pandemic forced Parcham to take classes online and conduct mental health sessions simultaneously for girls to remain positive and emotionally stable under lockdown.
Ever since Parcham has taken flight, they have not looked back. The team now plans to start an academy to train girls from impoverished backgrounds.

The organisation illuminated how society has often generalized the perception of Muslim women being oppressed and various stereotypes that are widely held.

RBTC Maharashtra Nominee. SUMAIRA ABDULALI, Environmentalist. Founder, Awaaz Foundation. Convenor of the Movement against Intimidation, Threat, and Revenge against Activists (MITRA). Mumbai. Maharashtra.

Sumaira Abdulali is also Ex. Co-Chairman of the Conservation Sub Committee and Honorary Secretary of Asia's oldest and largest environmental NGO, the Bombay Natural History Society, and is currently a Governing Council Member.
Sumaira hails from a family legacy of stalwarts and leaders who have participated and led social and environmental struggles. She admits that her personal learning journey owes much to their experiences and the motivation she drew from them. Sumaira is from a well respected Muslim family that have always been involved in progressive social issues. Her maternal grandmother was part of the Indian freedom struggle and her paternal grandfather was a stalwart on the issue of women’s emancipation and gender equality.
Preferring to learn from life experiences rather than formal education, Sumaira chose to let go of a college education and got involved with environmental issues, such as the movement against sand mining. Taking her cue from her familial mentors, Sumaira was a passive participant, but actively opposed the lobby of sand miners (who had immense political and economic power). A turning point was when she put a stop to an illegal sand mining operation by standing in front of and blocking their trucks. This event put the illegal sand mining operations around Mumbai on the map of not only the media and general public, but the State administration, and it culminated in a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Sumaira and other citizens.
From these experiences, Sumaira realised the need to provide a support network for those working for progress on various social, environmental, and cultural issues. In 2002, she began an organisation, Movement against Intimidation Threat and Revenge against Activists and with tireless efforts, it has been successful in persuading the Mumbai Police to create a special cell for to protect those undertaking legitimate activism.
At this time she joined her uncle Saad Ali, a pioneer in noise pollution, and filed a PIL in the Bombay High Court. The court order to the PIL and the subsequent reaction was a turning point in Sumaira’s journey as an environmental activist, and she was convinced her ‘life calling’ was to be a crusader against noise regulation. Two factors convinced her of the need to organise against it. First, the calls from those being victimised by this hazard, but didn’t know whom to turn to. And secondly, in spite of a favourable court order, the belief of much of society, including several persons of authority in the government and society, that the order was redundant due to the lack of an implementation system. These experiences were the cornerstones convincing Sumaira of the need to create a movement to organize the fight against noise pollution.
Sumaira has a persistent determination that inspires her work. Despite the barriers of a lack of information, insensitivity, apathy, and red tape, she relentlessly pursues her goal to mitigate noise pollution. With each experience of discouragement as well as each of path-breaking success, her resolve to work has only increased and she is committed to this movement until noise pollution is no longer an environmental hazard

RBTC Maharashtra nominee. ROSHAN JAHAN SHAIKH. MD. Doctor, Motivational Speaker. Mumbai. Maharashtra.

Dr Jahan, a native of UP’s Azamgarh district, is currently pursuing MD in Mumbai. She has also become a motivational speaker and is infusing confidence in physically challenged people. She fought a legal battle and was instrumental in getting the rules for physically challenged people modified.
Life has never been easy for Roshan Jahan Sheikh, daughter of a vegetable vendor in Mumbai. Until August 11, 2008, Rosha Jahan, then a promising student, had to endure economic hardships if she wanted to achieve her dream of becoming a doctor. However, on that day, her life changed for much worse: a train accident left both her legs amputated. But then, Roshan Jahan was never going to give up and a decade after her accident, she has not only completed her MBBS but also on course to finish her MD in Pathology, even though she has had to fight at every level.
After her accident, she was left bedridden for over three months but dropping out of school never occurred to her or her parents. Her mother started taking her to school to attend important practical classes and examinations on a wheelchair and by the next year, she had completed her Class 12 with impressive marks. She also achieved a stellar rank of 3 in the handicapped category for the state medical exams, but a legal technicality almost stopped her from enrolling. “The existing law allowed only students with “up to 70% handicap” to study medicine but I was 90% handicapped post the accident, so I was not allowed to take admission,” Roshan Jahan told TwoCircles.net during a conversation. Following the advice of Orthopaedic surgeon Dr Sanjay Kotharia, she knocked the door of the Bombay High court with help of advocate PB Patil in 2011 and won the case and took admission in KEM (King Edward Memorial) Medical College, Mumbai.

Farah Khan-Ali has always been creatively inclined. Her sense of visual perception stimulates her senses to see design in the most least expected places. In her own words she says “I view the world around us from a different perspective. What necessarily is to others is not what I see it as. I am captivated by our natural environment and any form, shape that catches my fancy stimulates me to translate that inanimate thought into an animate object of beauty and art.”

She admits that she has to do everything well so that it all comes together eventually.
With 21 years of focus and experience in this field, she still feels like a creatively inclined soul who happened to come into Jewellery Designing by chance, only to discover that she was born for it.

RBTC Maharashtra nominee. NEELOFER AKHTAR, Lawyer, Advocate Mumbai High Court. Specializing in Famiy Laws. Mumbai.

Neelofer Akhtar, Advocate, Mumbai high court, specialising in family laws.
Adv. Neelofar Akhtar (M.A., B.Ed., LL.B) joined him and specialized in personal laws and is exclusively practicing in Family Court at Bandra, Mumbai.
Triple talaq is an absolutely sinful act that has no place in Islam. And we have now reached a situation in India where the courts are no longer willing to accept this practice as lawful. In the past two years I have personally handled about a dozen cases and succeeded in getting rulings, where the court refused to accept the husband’s claim of having divorced his wife and ordered that the husbands concerned pay for the maintenance of the wife and children.
Unfortunately, the media, as also the ordinary Muslim, man and woman, are still largely ignorant of this changed reality. Giving wide publicity to these judgements could go a long way in putting a check on the practice of instant divorce.
Conflicts within marriage in Muslim homes are arising today due to changed social circumstances: in lower middle class homes it is the demand for dowry which is totally un-Islamic; in middle class homes it is interference from the husband’s family; in upper class families, where more and more women are getting into professional careers, it is the wife’s pressure to break out of the joint family mould.
Another highly disturbing trend is that of the Muslim male who goes abroad for work. Often the wife’s family members are coaxed, cajoled or coerced into contributing towards large payments to the recruiting agents. The husband goes abroad promising to send a visa for his wife soon. But in very many cases what she receives after anxious waiting is not the visa but a talaqnama. Often, all that the wife knows is the post box address of the husband’s workplace, so it is very difficult serving sermons on the man.
These are all real life situations that cannot be wished away and have to be addressed. In this context, the nikahnama, a document that clearly spells out the terms of the marital contract, becomes very important. It is commonly thought that in Islam only the husband has a right to talaq, while the wife can at best ask for khula but on condition that she foregoes all her property-related rights. But this is not true. For example, divorce by mutual consent is fully acceptable in Islam. Then there is the provision of talaq-e-tafweez, whereby, through an agreement between the husband and the wife either at the time of marriage or any time thereafter, the husband delegates his right to ask for divorce also to the wife.
Until the ’40s it was a widely prevalent practice among the upper class Muslim families in UP, where to safeguard their daughter’s interests, they would incorporate the talaq-e-tafweez provision in the nikahnama. This is an over 100-year-old practice, well-recognised by the courts, but about which there is near total ignorance among Muslims today. It is perfectly acceptable in Islam (Surah 33, ayat 28 of the Koran) that at the time of marriage, a bride can stipulate conditions for the marriage that are lawful and in accordance with public morality. This could include, for example, clauses concerning a husband’s second marriage, maintenance, custody of children, share in matrimonial property, etc.
Incidentally, a nikahnama is a very private document that does not necessarily need the approval or endorsement of the Muslim Personal Law Board or any other authority. We have drawn up a nikahnama in 2001 and I know of 12-13 couples who have entered into marriage according to its stipulations.
