RBTC Youth Leader Nominee. ZOYA TAYABJI , Wildlife Conservation. Mumbai. Maharashtra.

Zoya Tyabji: Born 14th November 1991

Growing up, I was fortunate to spend my summers on the beaches of Alibaug, Maharashtra, which greatly influenced my passion and fascination for the sea. Unfortunately, over the years, I have also seen it erode – from tourism and light pollution, to stranding of marine mammals, and beaches filled with tar (oil) balls due to industrialization. This fuelled my passion to conserve marine systems, and I studied to become a marine biologist.

While completing my BSc in St. Xaviers College, Mumbai and MSc in Biodiversity from  Pune University, I volunteered with several researchers studying the behaviour of flying lizards and tracking King Cobras in the rainforests of Agumbe, Karnataka, to studying the estuary use by Indo-pacific humpback dolphins in Kerala. This allowed me to understand dimensions broader than just fascinating animals, and underpinning conflicts that underlie but on which conservation heavily dependends.

Soon after my masters in 2015, I worked in the marine education sector, and researched marine taxa such as the terrestrial life of sea kraits, reef resilience, and shark and ray fisheries. Today, I lead the shark and ray fisheries in Wildlife Conservation Society-India, and am a PhD candidate with Dalhousie University, where I use interdisciplinary approaches to manage and conserve both livelihoods of people and marine taxa, focusing on sharks and rays in India.

Apart from this, one can catch me playing ultimate frisbee, enjoying traveling, SCUBA diving or enjoying a new sport.

It helped her financially, and parallelly, she learnt the art of handling multiple things at the same time. Despite all the hardships and financial struggles, she scored well in her 10th and 12th board examinations.
First graduate from the familyAmidst a lot of criticism from extended family for being the first woman to go to college, she secured an engineering seat with strong support from her parents. Pursuing dream MBA from IIMAfter 5+ years of work, she decided to get back to her dream of pursuing MBA from top B-School in India. The journey looked extremely difficult in the beginning. In spite of the challenges, she performed well in CAT and secured admission in Indian Institute of Management Calcutta. The B-School journey isn’t bed of roses either – added to the difficulty of MBA curriculum, she had to manage to be back to studies after years of work. Even though it was little tough in the beginning, she worked hard to secure an Institute Rank of 21 among 480 students in her Term-3 MBA examination. She did her summer internship with Uber and worked on a new product line development for the company. She is looking forward to take-up a role of a Product Manager in a leading Tech firm after MBA. RBTC Youth Leader Nominee. ROSHAN JAHAN SHEIKH, 23, Doctor, Overcoming disability. Click side arrow for full profile.

Disability did not come in the way of 23-year-old Roshan Jahan Sheikh, daughter of a vegetable vendor in Mumbai. Until August 11, 2008, Rosha Jahan, then a promising student, had to endure economic hardships if she wanted to achieve her dream of becoming a doctor. However, on that day, her life changed for much worse: a train accident left both her legs amputated. But then, Roshan Jahan was never going to give up and a decade after her accident, she has not only completed her MBBS but also on course to finish her MD in Pathology, even though she has had to fight at every level.
After her accident, she was left bedridden for over three months but dropping out of school never occurred to her or her parents. Her mother started taking her to school to attend important practical classes and examinations on a wheelchair and by the next year, she had completed her Class 12 with impressive marks. She also achieved a stellar rank of 3 in the handicapped category for the state medical exams, but a legal technicality almost stopped her from enrolling. “The existing law allowed only students with “up to 70% handicap” to study medicine but I was 90% handicapped post the accident, so I was not allowed to take admission,” Roshan Jahan told TwoCircles.net during a conversation. Following the advice of Orthopaedic surgeon Dr Sanjay Kotharia, she knocked the door of the Bombay High court with help of advocate PB Patil in 2011 and won the case and took admission in KEM (King Edward Memorial) Medical College, Mumbai.

Change Makers in Social Development

RBTC Youth Leader Nominee. ZAINAB KHAN. Child Rights Activist, First girl in her village to complete schooling. Elected Bal Pradhan. Chandora Village Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. Click side arrow for profile details.

Zainab Khan, a former child laborer, used to stitch footballs to earn for her family. For a child of an impressionable age of ten, this did not give her much avenue to break social stigmas and become something bigger rather than follow the path already laid out for her. However, Ms. Khan always knew that there was more to her life than just giving up her finest growing years, that too for an activity she should not be doing in the first place. The monumental turning point in Ms. Khan’s life came in 2006 with the advent of the ‘Bachpan Bachao Andolan’, a famous child’s right movement that made its way to her village in Meerut. According to this movement, there was a need to create a ‘Bal Panchayat’, through which the children of the village could protect themselves from exploitation, shun child labour, and talk about pertinent issues that were affecting them. This Panchayat was to democratically elect a few representatives from among the children of the village. At the age of five, she  experienced a spark of independence for the first time, as she was elected the ‘Bal Pradhan’. Ms. Khan was the first girl in her village to travel everyday to the main city to complete her 12thstandard.Like most villages in India, hers lacked the basic infrastructure to establish a high school in the premises. Fortunately, Ms. Khan met the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Akhilesh Yadavat a function in Lucknow. She told him about the children in Chandora, and their inability to complete their education due to the lack of infrastructure and resources. Following the conversation, the Chief Minister instructed the DIOS and a Higher Secondary School was established in Chandora. With the establishment of the school, Zainab not only accomplished her vision but also elevated the pursuits of thousands of children brooding at Chandora. She also laid out the foundation of a College in her village so that young lads and ladies wouldn’t have to go far of land to complete their education.Ms. Khan’s struggle to help slow down, if not halt, child labour and to cause the establishment of a stable education centre for the children of her village in Uttar Pradesh, is an inspiration for all of us.  References/Sourceshttps://yourstory.com/2016/07/zainab-khan-chandorahttps://www.chewda.com/zainab-khan-the-activist-whose-suffering-trailed-her-success-story/https://www.theweekendleader.com/Heroism/2256/schooling-girls.htmlhttps://www.reddit.com/r/india/comments/5jisz4/first_girl_from_meerut_village_to_finish_school/
