Inspiring Muslim Women of India in Global Diaspora Based in Middle East & Asia
Rising Beyond The Ceiling is a global initiative to shine a spotlight on achievements and contributions of Muslim Women in and of India. This RBTC 100 Women Global inspirations Compendium seeks to recognize Muslim women from India who have made their mark across the globe in many countries around the world. All these women have done their initial studies in India but later moved to other countries and received accolades and successes in many fields.
While they may have nationalities of other countries today and live in countries and cities across the globe, they are a source of pride to India and their Alma Mater institutions in India. This global compendium is also to serve as inspiration and roles models for the next generation of Indian women who aspire to make careers globally.

Nominations of inspiring Indian Muslim women who migrated from India and are now living and making a contribution to development and progress in the Middle East and Asia are invited. The women can be professionals in any of the categories - academicians, doctors, lawyers, authors, poets, painters, scientists, researchers, corporate and international development professionals, entrepreneurs, economists, journalists or any innovative field. The nominees would be alumni of any educational institution in India (school, college, university).
Criteria for RBTC 100 Global Inspirations (1) Women professionals who have immigrated to the middle east and countries in Asia from India; (2) They have a degree from an Indian educational institution prior to migration ; (3) They are currently living in any state/city of Middle east or Asia (can be citizens of any country); (4) They can be from any profession or field of work- STEM, Media, Entrepreneurship, Arts, Sports others as in categories below; (5) They have made their mark in their chosen field in the country of residence; (6) They identify themselves as Muslim (7) Contemporary /Any age above 21 years.

Dr. Sumbul Zaheer is a Senior Consultant in Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging at Singapore General Hospital.
Dr. Zaheer says that her journey has at times been arduous, but extremely fulfilling from her Medical School in India at Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, AMU, Aligarh to her current position as a consultant in the department of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging. The hurdles that she encountered from having studied Medicine in India were mainly in the form of licensing issues, which she overcame through subsequent training in Internal Medicine in United Kingdom.
After obtaining the MRCP in UK in 2002 Sumbul started her first job in Internal medicine. This was followed by a short period of part time work in Emergency Medicine. Subsequently Dr. Zaheer took up advanced specialist training in Nuclear Medicine in 2007, which provided a great fit and she worked in the department of her training. This was until the end of 2015, when she battled serious illness, continuing treatment till 2016, and returned to work only in 2017.
Dr. Zaheer continues to be a clinician, trainer, educator and mentor in Nuclear Medicine. She is involved in the treatment of thyroid cancers and in PET/CT imaging and diagnostic techniques abd has several published papers to her credit. Sumbul is the recipient of Singhealth/ SGH long-service award.

Dr. Parveen Rasheed has been an ex-Associate Professor at the College of Medicine and Medical Sciences at Dammam University, Dammam, Saudi Arabia where she has served as an expert in Family and Community Medicine for 32 years. She also studied for her postgraduate degree (MD) and taught at J.N. Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) for 8 years before going to Saudi Arabia in 1977. While her early education was from the prestigious school of Loreto . Lucknow, she completed her MBBS from Gwalior in 1966.
Dr. Rasheed has been a well acclaimed teacher and active researcher at AMU as well as Dammam University. Having published several papers in reputed medical journals of Saudi Arabia, India, WHO, UK and USA, her main focus in research has been in the areas of Maternal & Child Heath, Nutrition and Public Health. Presently she is a peer reviewer of research articles, and a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Family & Community Medicine, Saudi Arabia. She significantly contributed in laying the foundation of the postgraduate programs in Family Medicine as well as Community Medicine at Dammam University. Apart from teaching activities and guidance of students in their research projects and theses writing, she also worked as a Family physician in the urban and rural health centers of the College.
Dr. Parveen Rasheed’s career in Saudi Arabia initiated at a time when promotive and preventive health care was negligible. With the acceptance of the Alma Ata declaration of WHO by Saudi Arabia in 1981 and consequent set up of primary health centers, she along with other members of her department established a model health center in a rural area of Saudi Arabia for training of students and health care delivery of the local population. Being a coordinator for outreach health programs for many years, she organized field visits for students to deliver Health education and preventive care activities in the homes of people, in schools, at health exhibitions in Malls and Primary health centers as well as other sites.

A spoken word artist, I've been performing at stages across Singapore, Malaysia and India, and regularly contribute my writings on poetry and gender-based issues to Scroll, Asian Review of Books, Mekong Review, Livemint, among others. As a speaker, my focus areas are gender-equality and social justice and have been invited to speak at UNESCAP (Thailand), Sciences Po (France), University of Oxford (UK), Brandeis University (US), Fundação Getulio Vargas (Brazil), and Lloyd's DiveIn Festival.
I've also worked as researcher-fact checker on James Crabtree’s ‘Billionaire Raj’ (2018) and science journalist Angela Saini’s ‘The Patriarchs’ (2023). I completed a Master in Public Policy on the Li Ka Shing Scholarship from National University of Singapore and hold a Bachelors in Journalism from the University of Delhi.

Nisham Abdulla Rayees is a broadcaster and social entrepreneur, based in Muscat, Oman. Having established her own family early in life in Muscat, Oman, she turned to becoming a broadcaster with the national radio service, Radio Oman. As a student, she stood out among her peers, winning the Kerala State youth festival for debate as well as leading her school’s marching band. She was also chosen to be Head Girl at St. Joseph’s Girl’s High School, Kozhikode. She overcame the tragedy of losing her mother at a very young age, and pushed on to complete her Bachelor of English Literature degree from Providence College in Kozhikode.
Over her career, she established herself as a consciousness of the community, doing live coverage of Oman parliament openings, Oman national day celebrations and other events important to public life. She engaged with social leaders and personalities, while running her own series of shows covering topics ranging from health, business and current affairs as well as spotlighting the role of women in business and wider society. She has used her voice, energy and vocation in order to connect those in need to those that are eager to help. She is a key node in a network of women who help identify, broadcast and materially support causes ranging from food and medical charities to fundraising for disaster-relief to the sheltering and rehabilitation for distressed women.
Her long-running passion for jewellery resulted in her establishing her own brand of designer diamond jewellery, Fiza Jewels. Through the Fiza boutique, she has been designing and producing unique and bespoke jewellery.

Currently working as the Senior Women Protection Advisor for United Nations Mission in South Sudan, I primarily concentrate on engagement with various parties to conflict perpetrating sexual violence in conflict to work towards behavioural change from within and to strengthen accountability at national and international level. I work closely with four parties to the conflict at various levels, from ground level troops to the leadership of government forces and different non- state actors. Additionally I am responsible for developing remedial action and ensue adequate response for survivors with a survivor centred approach. I have worked with national, international organizations, UN agencies to make sure resources are in place for swift responses through developing various early warning and coordination mechanisms. I am responsible for designing innovative projects and raising resources for their implementation. As an advisor to Special Representative of Secretary General for South Sudan, I shape strategies and interventions on behalf of the mission on sexual violence in conflict.

Dr. FARAH NAQVI is an academician, corporate trainer and HRD consultant associated with many MNCs and institutions in the field of academics, behavioural training, consulting and research. She has worked with premier institutes like IIM Ahmedabad, IBA Bangalore, Centre for Organization Development Hyderabad and ICFAI Hyderabad. She has recently come out with the fictional book “The Light in Blackout”. Currently, she is based in Kuwait with her family, and provides training, advising and consulting services to higher education institutions.
I was born in a simple and loving family in the city of Allahabad as the youngest of four siblings. My father worked with the Ministry of Food, Govt. of India and my mother was a homemaker. I was always left in awe at the sincere and hardworking attitude of my father and my mother’s selfless, responsible and caring nature.
I have worked primarily in the education sector and based on my experience I personally felt that there was no one stopping the meritorious women from occupying leadership roles. My research work in gender studies in India indicated that the main cause of lack of women in executive positions was not the glass ceiling but the challenges associated with work-life balance. With the patriarchal mindset that responsibilities of home are the primary domain of women, working women of childbearing and rearing age, loaded with responsibilities are many a times forced to compromise on their career goals especially those with no support system. The glass ceiling is mostly seen in the echelon of a company’s top management, but nothing can stop a woman who is passionate and excellent in her work.

After which, she lived in Morocco for a period of 7 years teaching a global body of students at the English College of Tangier consecutively followed by The American School of Tangier.
The book " A Small Window in the Iron Gate" is Asma's first Fiction novel apart from the papers she has written on Mental Retardation, Behavior Modification, Physio Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Individual and Group Counseling and Community Rehabilitation.

She was on the jury of iWrite’19 a competition for aspiring writers at Jaipur BookMark, Jaipur Literature Festival and is a recipient of the ‘Outstanding Aligarian Award’ and also an award presented by Bollywood scriptwriter and lyricist - Javed Akhtar in 2017.In 2019, she got the ‘Global Star of the Year’ award at the AMU Women of Influence Conclave, held at Atlantis, Dubai. Hafiza Sayed is a Dubai based artist who works mainly in landscape art. A native of Mumbai, India, her colourful artworks reflect her glorious artistic journey. She was born and raised in an illustrious family of writers and artists. She picked up the brush at a young age of 3 or 4 under the tutelage of her father. Her early education was at home and later in university. Hafiza studied at the JJ School of Art, Mumbai, India. She is also a trained interior designer and has worked extensively in this field in the past days of her career to continue her family business.
Hafiza is also a Muslima Ambassador, one of the young women artists that have been working with International Museum of Women that had partnered with three museums around the world to work with Muslima Ambassadors in creating and planning Muslima. Muslima is a global online exhibition from the International Museum of Women (IMOW), now Global Fund for Women.
She had also been part of many group works and exhibitions including her work with the Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilisation on a year-long exhibition that people well received. She builds her substantial following with her unique signature style inspired from surrealism. Hafiza’s recent solo art exhibition, “Towards Abstraction,” displayed at Studio Seven, Business Bay, Dubai, in 2019. The exhibition reveals close to 30 paintings that represent the journey of an artist in different phases.
One of her masterpieces is “The Invisible Muslima”, a depiction of a Muslim woman among millions unsung and often ignored Muslim women in globalised societies. The woman in the painting is strong, liberated, awakened enough to voice opinions in demand and exercise of her rights.
While sharing her journey, she said, “I took up art very late in my life. I was pursuing an interior designing job because that was my family business. My father was also an artist but he had stopped painting and started the business of interior designing. So I did the same for a very long time until I landed in Dubai. “Despite being away from serious painting for a very long period of time, the art in me and training which I had from JJ School of Art stayed with me like a shadow and never went away from me, though I would paint and sketch at home in my free time.”

She builds her substantial following with her unique signature style inspired from surrealism. Hafiza’s recent solo art exhibition, “Towards Abstraction,” displayed at Studio Seven, Business Bay, Dubai, in 2019. The exhibition reveals close to 30 paintings that represent the journey of an artist in different phases.
One of her masterpieces is “The Invisible Muslima”, a depiction of a Muslim woman among millions unsung and often ignored Muslim women in globalised societies. The woman in the painting is strong, liberated, awakened enough to voice opinions in demand and exercise of her rights.
While sharing her journey, she said, “I took up art very late in my life. I was pursuing an interior designing job because that was my family business. My father was also an artist but he had stopped painting and started the business of interior designing. So I did the same for a very long time until I landed in Dubai. “Despite being away from serious painting for a very long period of time, the art in me and training which I had from JJ School of Art stayed with me like a shadow and never went away from me, though I would paint and sketch at home in my free time.”

Dr. Aliya Fatehullah has a keen interest in epithelial biology especially the factors that govern oncogenesis. Her work has been focused on basic research that has aimed to identify the key regulators of various aspects of oncogenesis. She is currently searching for projects that allow her to apply this basic knowledge to more translational and clinical based research.
Since May 2014 Dr. Fatehullah has been working with the Epithelial Stem Cell Group (Nick Barker Lab), Institute of Medical Biology as Senior Research Fellow. Her current project involves the generation of a novel mouse model that faithfully recapitulates features of advanced human gastric cancer. This mouse model is now being utilized to elucidate the pathways and their dysregulation that underpin the spread of metastatic disease. The major themes of the project are to identify novel genes that can be developed further as disease biomarkers and/or potential drug targets. This project has resulted in a highly cited review, whilst the primary research paper is currently underpreparation.

Huma Khan is currently working as a practical demonstrator in the Department of School of Life and Environmental Sciences, Deakin University , Australia where she provides assistance to students doing their Bachelors in carrying out the lab practicals and assessment of practical worksheets. She is an alumnus of Aligarh Muslim University , India from where she got both her Master's and Bachelor’s in Science degree in Industrial Chemistry She has been awarded as University Gold Medalist for both graduation as well as post graduation . She is also the receiver of Sir Syed Excellence in Science Award . In addition to this , Huma has been awarded with the President Award by Mrs Pratibha Singh Patil for reflecting extraordinary leadership skills and nation building . She also received The Governor Award.
A phD candidate of CSIRO ( Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization ) , Australia, she is currently working on the development of Polyacrylonitrile based precursor fibres with novel microstructures and unique geometries using Australia's first pilot-scale wet spinning facility, jointly owned by Deakin University and CSIRO , Australia. Her work also includes subsequent carbonisation of these precursor fibres using continuous, large scale carbonisation line at Carbon Nexus Centre, which is a globally unique open access research facility in Australia. Being an alumni of Aligarh Muslim University, she holds Certificate of proficiency in Arabic as well as Urdu language. In the past , she has also served as Research Assistant in CSIR Council of Scientific and Industrial Research where she has worked for the development of novel organic-inorganic polymeric absorbents for the mitigation of hazardous ions from water. Recently her patent application has been published reporting the development of polymeric absorbents for fluoride removal from contaminated water which is a part of her previous role as project Assistant at CSIR-CSMCRI, Bhavnagar, India.
On the co-curricular side , she is the executive secretary of Islamic Society by the DUSA ( Deakin University student Association).
