Anwar Jahan Zuberi, Educationist, Served as Vice Chancellor of Calicut University from 2007 to 2011. She has the distinction of being the first female Vice-Chancellor of Calicut University and the first Muslim woman to serve as Vice Chancellor of an Indian University. Prior to taking up the position, Dr. Zuberi worked as Professor of Education at Aligarh Muslim University.
During her stewardship of Calicut University several achievements and academic and administrative reform have been noted. When only two of the universities in Kerala went for NAAC re-accreditation in 2010, Calicut University got top score. The university was reorganized to introduce a ‘school system’ to convert various disciplines and departments into cohesive units and bring them together under an academic roof. The reorganization was designed to facilitate inter-departmental cooperation, inter-disciplinary teaching and research, and the pooling of resources and expertise for greater academic effectiveness. The university introduced the new Departments of Nano-Technology, Environmental Studies, Computer Science and Political Science in 2010 and opened three new centres such as Inter-University Centre for Plant Biotechnology, Institute of Tribal Studies and Research, and Centre for Classical and Traditional Studies, some of them will be the first of its kind in the country.
Some other achievements include: Calicut University sanctioned 65 new affiliated colleges as well as 161 courses. It opened overseas centres in countries such as Kuwait, Ras-al-Khaima, Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The university introduced the choice-based credit semester system (CCSS) in a time-bound manner which would bring greater academic choice and curricular flexibility and benefit students. Among many other achievements, strides were also made in international academic collaboration with MoUs being signed with Charles University of Prague and Tubingen University of Germany.

AYESHA KIDWAI, Theoretical Linguist. Professor Jawaharlal Nehru University. New Delhi. Awarded Infosys Prize for Humanities (2013). Click side arrow for profile details.
Ayesha Kidwai is an Indian theoretical linguist. She is a professor at the Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi, and an awardee of the Infosys Prize for Humanities in 2013.Ms. Kidwai has served as Senior Editor, Oxford Research Encyclopedia. She has been a visiting professor in a number of institutions in the US and Europe. Ayesha's theoretical linguistics work has applied Noam Chomsky's notion of Universal grammar to South Asian languages. She proposed a novel theory on free word order, exemplified by scrambled noun-phrases in Hindi-Urdu. Ms. Kidwai undertook several research projects in field linguistics. Between 1999 and 2001, she investigated the acquisition of the Hindi language among children, and she studied the Urdu's socio-cultural effects on other Indian languages. Kidwai showed that because Sanskrit-speaking ruling classes captured only the public domain, this prestige language was unable to completely cripple less prestigious languages (Indo-Aryan, Dravidian and Austro-Asiatic) that pervaded the subcontinent.Ms. Kidwai also set up a committee to help orient and sensitize against sexual harassment on the campus of Jawaharlal Nehru University. It was responsible for crisis management as well as mediation, investigation, and redress in response to complaints of sexual harassment. The template was adopted by other universities across India. In 2013, a survey she co-organised with Madhu Sahni revealed that more than half the women in JNU had suffered sexual harassment. Kidwai also investigated the fates of women abducted during the Partition, reporting in 2014 that nearly 80,000 women had been found in the massive recovery operations in the aftermath of the Partition.Ayesha Kidwai obtained a master's and doctoral degree in linguistics from the Jawaharlal Nehru University.References

Naheed Abidi, 59, is an Indian scholar of Sanskrit and writer. She was honoured by the Government of India, in 2014, by bestowing on her the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award, for her contributions to the field of literature.
Ms. Abidi was born in 1961, in Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh. Choosing Sanskrit as her subject, Abidi secured her MA from the K. V. Degree College, Mirzapur. She went on to secure a doctoral degree (PhD) from the Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith, Varanasi and published her thesis titled as Vedic Sahitya Mein Ashviniyon Ka Swaroop (The Form of Ashvinis in Vedic Literature) in 1993. She has also been conferred DLitt (Honoris Causa) by the Lucknow University. Dr. Abidi also serves as an Executive Council member at the Sampurnanad Sanskrit University.
In 2005, Abidi started working as a lecturer without any pay at Banaras Hindu University. Soon after, she joined the Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith to work as a part-time lecturer on a daily wage scheme. However, the Sanskrit scholar,known as the first Muslim female to have worked as a lecturer in Sanskrit, had difficulties finding a regular job.
Her first book was published in 2008 and was titled Sanskrit Sahitya Mein Rahim - which is an account of the Sanskrit leanings of the renowned poet, Abdul Rahim Khan-e-Khana. This was followed by Devalayasya Deepa, a translation of Chairag-e-Dair, written by poet, Mirza Ghalib. The third book was Sirr-e-Akbar, a Hindi translation of 50 Upanishads, earlier translated by the Mughal prince, Dara Shikoh into Persian. She has published a Hindi translation of Vedanta, translated into Persian by Dara Shikoh and also the Sufi texts by the prince.

Najma Akhtar, 67, is an academic administrator. Since April 2019, she has been the Vice Chancellor of the Jamia Millia Islamia University at New Delhi. She is the first woman to hold the post in the university's 99-year history.
Before her appointment as Vice Chancellor, Ms. Akhtar worked for fifteen years at the National Institute of Educational Planning and Administration, New Delhi, leading training courses for senior officials from 130 countries. Earlier, she established the first state-level educational management institute in Uttar Pradesh at Allahabad. Earlier Najma served as the Controller of Examination and Director of Academic Programs at Aligarh Muslim University. She has also been a consultant to UNESCO, UNICEF and DANIDA.

Qamar Rahman, 76, (Born 15th August 1944) is a Scientist who has worked extensively in the last 40 years to understand the physiological effects of nanoparticles. She is known nationally and internationally for her work on asbestosis, the effects of slate dust and other household and environmental particulate pollution and means for improving occupational health.
Focusing her research in nano toxicology and geno-toxicity, Dr. Rahman has conducted in-depth studies in asbestos mining areas, which includes, monitoring identification of asbestos varieties and complete medical examination along with specific biomarkers for risk assessment. Her extensive research on women and their occupational hazards, highlighted specific problems in different organized and unorganized sectors where women workers are exposed to toxic chemicals. Her research paper on “Evidence that ultrafine titanium dioxide induces micronuclei and apoptosis in Syrian hamster embryo fibroblasts.“ has been cited 350 times according to Google Scholar.
Dr. Rahman was awarded honorary doctorate by Rostock University Germany in 2009. She is the first Indian who achieved the distinction from this 600 year old University. She is invited every year as visiting Professor to teach the students at this University. Dr. Rahman has also collaborated and presented at many Universities in USA, U.K, France, Italy, Norway, Denmark and Finland and was external advisor to WHO Geneva on occupational safety of nanomaterials. She serves as European Union’s External Advisor on Risk Governance of Nanotechnology.
Dr. Rahman has served as the Deputy Director of the Indian Institute of Toxicology Research in Lucknow. She is currently Director & Dean Research (Science and Technology) at Amity University Lucknow Campus, India. Qamar has the distinction of being the first Muslim Fellow of National Academy of Science (FNA). In 2013 she was awarded the Vigyan Bhushan Award. She is also the recipient of the Yash Bharti Award from the Government of Uttar Pradesh. Dr. Rahman has been a member of Central Wakf Board and Chairperson of Minority Women’s Education.
Dr. Qamar Rehman did her schooling at Abdullah Girls’ High School of Aligarh Muslim University. She completed her M.Sc. and PhD from St. John College, Agra.

Qudsia Tahseen, Professor of Zoology at Aligarh Muslim University, is recognized for her extensive research on biodiversity, taxonomy, ecology and developmental biology of terrestrial and aquatic nematodes and has made remarkable contribution in the field of Nematology following a holistic approach.
Professor Tahseen’s critical analyses of species supplemented with electron microscopic details were commended by peers and her wide taxonomic skills have been accredited internationally. She remains so far the only Asian to receive ONTA (Organization of Nematologists of Tropical America) Special Award for sustained excellence in Nematology which she received in 2005. Qudsia has also conducted pioneering studies in India on nematode development while her ecological findings led to the understanding of shifts in subterranean food web.
Professor Tahseen has been invited to reputed labs of Europe and America under prestigious fellowships of Royal Society, Rothamsted International, INSA, DBT, TWAS, TWOWS, DFG, Chinese Academy of Sciences, European Union Consortium, and Australian Academy of Science, Max Planck Institute etc. for collaborative research or to teach/ guide post-graduate students at Erasmus Mundus and EUMAINE programmes.
She has the distinction of being the only women faculty of Aligarh Muslim University to be the fellow of all three coveted National Science academies, INSA, IASc and NASI. Coincidentally at present she is the only AMU faculty to hold this honour. Her biography has been included in “Lilawati’s Daughters-Top Hundred Women Scientists of India” published by Indian Academy of Sciences and in “The Girl’s Guide to a Life in Science” by Young Zubaan Publishers (One of the 23 selected biographies of renowned Indian Women Scientists to encourage young girls to opt for a science career).

Dr. Tahseen received her PhD in Zoology in 1989 and has been working as a faculty at AMU since 1992.

Rehana Khatoon, 72, is a scholar and former Head of the Department of Persian, University of Delhi. She is the author of the Encyclopaedia of Persian Language and Literature (India and Pakistan). She was honored by the Government of India, in 2014, by bestowing on her the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award, for her contributions to the propagation of Persian language and literature.

Syeda Saiyidain Hameed, 77 (born 1943 in Kashmir) is an Indian social and women's rights activist, educationist, writer and a former member of the Planning Commission of India. In early years Dr. Hameed worked at the University of Alberta where she completed her PhD. In 1978, was promoted as the Director of Colleges and Universities at the Ministry of Advanced Education and Power, Government of Alberta, Canada.
On return to India in 1984, Dr. Hameed’s research activities, focused on Sufism and the Muslim socio-political leaders. Her first assignment was with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), working on Maulana Abul Kalam Azad and Sufism from 1987 to 1991. She has published several books and reports. The first of the series was a book on Abul Kalam Azad, titled India's Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, a treatise on the life of the Indian freedom movement leader and the first Education Minister of the Independent India. This was followed by a translation of The Rubaiyat of Sarmad, a commentary on Muslims in India, Al Hilal and Nai Roshini: Two Attempts to Integrate Muslims Into Indian Policy, and a study on Sufism, Impact of Sufism on Indian Society.
Syeda Hameed's report, Voice of the Voiceless: Status of Muslim Women in India, published in 2000 in her capacity as a member of the National Commission for Women, is a document of her researches on the problems faced by minority women in India. She also published My Voice Shall be Heard: Muslim Women in India and compiled the real life stories of 12 of those women and documented their lives in her 2006 work, They Hang: 12 Women in My Portrait Gallery.
She is the founder trustee of the Women’s Initiative for Peace in South Asia (WIPSA) and the Centre for Dialogue and Reconciliation and a former member of the National Commission for Women (1997–2000). She served the Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) as its chancellor till January 2015. The Government of India awarded her the fourth highest civilian honor of the Padma Shri, in 2007, for her contributions to Indian society.

On return to India in 1984, Dr. Hameed’s research activities, focused on Sufism and the Muslim socio-political leaders. Her first assignment was with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), working on Maulana Abul Kalam Azad and Sufism from 1987 to 1991. She has published several books and reports. The first of the series was a book on Abul Kalam Azad, titled India's Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, a treatise on the life of the Indian freedom movement leader and the first Education Minister of the Independent India. This was followed by a translation of The Rubaiyat of Sarmad, a commentary on Muslims in India, Al Hilal and Nai Roshini: Two Attempts to Integrate Muslims Into Indian Policy, and a study on Sufism, Impact of Sufism on Indian Society.
Syeda Hameed's report, Voice of the Voiceless: Status of Muslim Women in India, published in 2000 in her capacity as a member of the National Commission for Women, is a document of her researches on the problems faced by minority women in India. She also published My Voice Shall be Heard: Muslim Women in India and compiled the real life stories of 12 of those women and documented their lives in her 2006 work, They Hang: 12 Women in My Portrait Gallery.
She is the founder trustee of the Women’s Initiative for Peace in South Asia (WIPSA) and the Centre for Dialogue and Reconciliation and a former member of the National Commission for Women (1997–2000). Mehbooba Mufti, 61 (born 22 May 1959) is a politician of the Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ms. Mufti served as the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir from 4 April 2016 to 19 June 2018. Mufti was the first and the last woman to hold the office of Chief Minister in the State.
She is the president of the PDP and was a member of the Indian parliament, representing Anantnag in the 16th Lok Sabha, before she was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir. She had previously represented Anantnag in the 14th Lok Sabha (2004–09).

Parveen Amanullah, 60, is a social activist turned politician. She served as the Minister of Social Welfare, Government of Bihar between 2010-2014 and was the first Muslim woman to hold the position of Minister in Bihar. Ms. Amanullah was elected as a member of the Bihar Legislative Assembly in 2010 from the Sahebpur Kamal constituency in Begusarai district as a candidate of the Janata Dal (United). She became the Social Welfare minister of Bihar ment and held the portfolio until February 2014 when she resigned citing "governance issues" and "lack of work satisfaction”. Syeda Anwara Taimur, 84, (born 24 November 1936- 28 September 2020) is an Indian politician, who was the chief minister of the State of Assam from 6 December 1980 to 30 June 1981. She is a leader of the Indian National Congress party in Assam and a member of the All India Congress Committee.
In the history of Assam, Anwara Taimur has the distinction of being the only female and Muslim Chief Minister of the state. Ms. Taimur is also the first Muslim woman Chief Minister of any state in India.
Anwara Taimur was an elected member of the Assam Assembly (MLA) in 1972, 1978, 1983, and 1991. From 1983 to 1985 she was the PWD Minister. In 1988 she was nominated to the Indian Parliament (Rajya Sabha). In 1991 she was appointed to the post of Minister for Agriculture in Assam.

Anjum Ara is a police officer of the Indian Police Service (IPS Batch 2012) Her family belongs to Kamharia, a village in Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh. Her father Ayub Shaikh, a civil engineer, is a government employee. Since joining the Indian Police Service in Himachal Pradesh, Anjum has served as Additional Superintendent Police Shimla, Superintendent Police at Solan and Senior Superintendent Police at Shimla as well as in Cyber Crime Departments, among others. During her district postings she made special efforts to change the image of police for citizens. Anjum Ara and her husband IAS officer Yunus Khan’s offered to support the expenses of the 12-year old daughter of Naib Subedar Paramjit Singh, who was killed in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch sector in May 2017. The couple contacted the martyr’s wife, Paramjit Kaur, and expressed the desire to look after Khushdeep, the younger daughter of the soldier, till she grows up and is independent. Aslam Khan is an officer of the Indian Police Service of 2007 Batch, Union Territory Cadre. She current serves as Superintendent of Police in Bureau of Police Research & Development (BPR&D) since 2019. Ms. Khan served as deputy commissioner of police, Delhi’s north-west district It was the first time in nearly six years that the district was being helmed by a woman officer and Khan came in with the reputation of a strict and upright officer. She had barely settled into the job, when she found herself handling a crime that has been a constant nightmare for the police. On the fifth anniversary of the Nirbhaya gang-rape case, a 16-year-old girl was gang-raped by three men in a park in her district. Early in the probe, one of the 2,000 suspects claimed he was around when his friends raped the girl. But Ms. Khan realized he was only trying to frame his enemies. She refused to arrest him and continued the hunt. Police nabbed the three suspects 20 days later, but it won Ms. Aslam Khan the respect and loyalty of her officers. Born in a family of farmers in a village in Rajasthan, it was a unique situation that got her the name of ‘Aslam’ — a name usually reserved for men. She says that her parents were expecting a boy and they had decided the name. So, even though a girl was born, they went ahead with the name. Aslam Khan’s parents gave her all opportunities for education, despite being uneducated themselves. Ms. Khan topped the political science stream in her graduation. Be it getting a scooter or more pocket money, she did not lose out to her two younger brothers.
Ms. Khan also set an example when she decided to lend a helping hand to the the family of a deceased truck driver in Jammu, Sardar Maan Singh, who was murdered by a gang of robbers on January 9, 2018, in Jahangirpuri. She was appreciated for going beyond her line of duty to help a family in need.

Reshma Nilofer Naha, 31, (Born 4 February 1989 at Chennai) is a maritime pilot. She is the first Indian woman as well as one among world's very few female marine pilots. She is currently involved in steering ships from sea to Kolkata & Haldia port. Reshma has piloted many vessels including the Navy, Coastguard, Merchant Navy and bulk carriers. She navigated her first vessel, the ICGS Rajkiran (Military Ops) as a trainee.
Reshma joined the Kolkata Port Trust in 2011 as a trainee. She served as a cadet at sea for a year and obtained the 2nd and 1st mates competency from the Directorate General of Shipping. She cleared the Grade III exam and became Hooghly River pilot in 2018.
Reshma parents were central government employees and she grew up in a small government quarters house in Anna Nagar, Chennai. Though Reshma doesn’t come from a shipping background, she knew was that she wanted a career that was challenging and out of the ordinary. A newspaper announcement about a shipping company offering a tailor-made dual competency programme changed the course of her life. After beating 4000 people in a national level talent hunt, Reshma managed to make it to the top lot who were selected to be placed on the ships. Five years of training at AMET University, Kanathur, amid 5,000 male students prepared Reshma for what she would encounter in a male-dominated industry. “There were only five female students at the university. It taught us how to tackle life’s pressures, face challenges and most importantly to not be intimidated by men,” she shares.
Ms. Nilofer Naha holds a B.E in Marine Technology from Birla Institute of Technology, Ranchi. She received Nari Shakti Puraskar Award from the President of India in 2019.

Ruweda Salam, made history when she became the first woman from Kashmir Valley to join the Indian Police Service after qualifying the Union Public Service Commission examination in 2013. Ruweda successfully completed her tough IPS training at National Police Academy in Hyderabad and was allocated Tamil Nadu cadre where she served as Assistant Commissioner of Police in Chennai, Coimbatore and Kadalur in northern Tamil Nadu. However, her aspirations were to serve in the administrative service. When she was growing up in Kashmir her father, who was in the Indian Information Service, often aspired her to becoming an IAS officer. She reappeared in the UPSC again in 2015 and cleared it to become an Indian Revenue Service officer. Ms. Salam is currently serving as Assistant Commissioner in the Ministry of Finance at Srinagar. Ms. Salam hails from a small border village of Farkin in one of the extreme corners of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district. Till 9th standard, she studied at Kupwara, then due to her father’s posting, she moved to Srinagar to complete her 10th and 10+2. She secured an MBBS seat in the Government Medical College, Srinagar and completed the course in 2011. While studying medicine, she would spare time to prepare for the Kashmir Administrative Services and after cracking it, she started preparing for the UPSC exams. Dr. Salam has a deep interest in supporting young people. Saarah Hameed Ahmed, 31, (Born 22 April, 1989) is a Pilot from Bengaluru, Karnataka. She was recruited by Spice Jet as a commercial pilot in 2010 and became the first Muslim woman pilot of India. In 2007, when she was just 18, Saarah enrolled with a flying school in the United States, the Paris Air Flight Training School in Vero Beach, Florida. After a year of study and logging 200 flight hours, Ahmed received her commercial pilot's license in 2008. She returned to India and undertook the process to convert her license to an Indian certification, which required both a waiting period and additional training in Lithuania to learn about specific commercial aircraft types. After completion of Bachelor of Business Administration course and some 1200 flying hours, Ms. Ahmed was recruited by SpiceJet in 2010 as a commercial pilot.

She been instrumental in designing and implementing several new professional courses such as Cyber Investigations Techniques for RPF. Saharish has taken up several challenges, such as during her tenure as Commandant 2nd Battalion Railway Protection Special Force at Gorakhpur, personnel under her command were deployed in sensitive locations in the North East, for election duty as well as emergency support across India.

Umme Fardina Adil is an officer of the Indian Revenue Service (Income Tax) of 2013 batch. She is the first distinction of being the first Muslim woman from India’s northeastern region to clear the Union Public Service Commission exam, since more than six decades after independence. Ms. Fardina Adil currently serves as Deputy Commissioner of Income Tax in Tax, Policy and Legislation Division, Central Board of Direct Taxes. Fardina is a resident of Hatigaon, Guwahati. She did her engineering in Computer Science from Mody Institute of Technology and Science, Rajasthan. After that she joined Accenture Services Pvt. Ltd. and worked as a senior programmer. Her dream is to see India free of open defecation. She worked on a research project on Low Cost Sanitation Technologies. Fardina sat for the Civil Services examination in 2012 and cleared it in her first attempt. She prepared for 8 months putting in about six hours every day and regularly depended on newspapers and Wikipedia for gathering knowledge about new topics. Ms. Adil feels women in Assam are in better position compared to those in northern part of India, both socially and economically. But it is also a fact that participation of Muslim women in public services is very low and it took 66 years of independence to get a Muslim woman civil servant from Assam. She is convinced Indian women’s status would improve if they get equal opportunities from childhood.

Parveen Talha is an Indian civil servant, the first Muslim woman to serve in any Class I civil service in India, the first woman to serve in the Central Bureau of Narcotics and the first and only Muslim woman to become a member of the Union Public Service Commission. Ms. Talha joined the Indian Revenue Service in 1969, becoming the first Muslim woman to enter the Revenue Service. Later, she served at the Commission at Mumbai and Kolkata and, also at the Central Excise Commission. The next move was to Narcotics Department as the Deputy Commissioner of Uttar Pradesh, fetching her another first as the only woman officer of the Central Bureau of Narcotics. After the stint at the Central Bureau of Narcotics, Parveen Talha was appointed as the Director General of the National Academy of Customs, Excise and Narcotics (NACEN), at their training department. She is credited with making NACEN an accredited training institute of the World Customs Organization's for Asia-Pacific region. Jameel Fathima Zeba, is an officer of the Indian Administrative Service (2018). She is a resident of Manikonda, Hyderabad. Her accomplishment is stunning as she happens to be the only Muslim girl to crack the civil services exam from Telangana in the last 70 years. Even in the undivided state no Muslim woman could make it.
Twice Zeba had prepared for the all India test, but giving up was not an option. Zeba persisted and in her third attempt in 2017. She secured 62nd rank in the examination and joined the West Bengal IAS Cadre. Zeba says that her father played an important role as he motivated her and guided her through the process. Having done her schooling from Presentation Convent in Jammu and being a topper all through, Ms. Asgar joined Batra Medical College in 2003 and secured first position in the MBBS in 2009. An interesting fact about her is that both she and her husband, Dr. Syed Abid Rasheed Shah, whom Sehrish met after joining Batra Medical College, qualified first in the Indian Police Service together, then made it to IAS and got married.
Dr. Asgar belongs to district Kishtwar in Jammu. Today she is Kashmir’s only woman Deputy Commissioner, currently posted at Budgam. Zainab Sayeed, is the first Muslim woman from West Bengal to crack the Civil Services Examination, 2014. She topped the UPSC interview by scoring highest marks. Zainab scored 220 out of total 275 marks in the interview and secured a rank of 107 in the examination. She joined the Indian Revenue Service. She works at the Custom and Exercise Department of the Ministry of Finance, Government of India. Ms. Sayeed graduated in English from St Xavier’s College, Kolkata. Thereafter, she went to Delhi and enrolled at the AJK Mass Communication and Research Centre at the Jamia Millia Islamia University and completed her Masters in Convergent Journalism in 2011. She wears the traditional ‘Rida’ (headscarf) since she was 13 years old. When asked in an interview why she wore the attire which is a religious marker her reply was that the Rida is part and parcel of her persona and one should wear clothes one feels comfortable in. Tajamul started kickboxing when she was just 5 years old and went on to become a champion in her chosen sport.
Born in Tarkpora, a remote village in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district, Tajamul is the first Kashmiri girl to achieve this feat. Islam studied in Class II, when she represented India in Italy, where 90 other countries participated.

Eleven-year old Tajamul today has set up her own sports academy called Haider Sports Academy in Kashmir. She is the coach at the Academy which currently has 720 children. Rehana Adeeb, Founder Astitva, is a victim turned survivor who has learnt to raise her voice and is helping women who fall prey to gender-based violence and fight injustices like rape and domestic violence.
Rehana was raped, forced to drop out of school, married off, and was a victim of domestic abuse all before she was 18 years old. To quote Rehana “By the time I realized that what I was going through was not right, I was already a mother of five daughters.”
Quite by accident, Rehana strayed into a meeting of Disha, a local NGO that worked on issues related to women’s rights. That is when she decided that she was not ready to take on any more abuse, and that she wanted to help other women in her area attain the same. But that also meant having to face constant threats and abuse, and being ostracized by her family and neighbors as well. Ignoring all that, unflinchingly, she started working with abused women and other NGOs. As she underwent training at the NGO, took on several responsibilities, and participated in activities to help women fight for their rights, her own confidence grew. Finally, Rehana set up her own NGO, Astitva, in the year 2005 to help women in Muzaffarnagar who were victims of all forms of gender-based violence.
Slowly people have started trusting her and not seeing her as a threat. Recently she was invited as a chief guest to a conference in Beijing, this has added a lot to her credibility. However, Rehana gets all forms of threats constantly because what she is doing is very much against the Khap and caste-based panchayats that have dominance in her locality. Yet, she marches on, undeterred, with emancipating as many women as possible as her only goal.

Khushboo Mirza, 35, is a scientist at the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) at Bangalore. Khusboo was part of the team of 12 engineers of the Check-Out Division of Chandrayan 1 ( India's first lunar probe) which carried out the thermal, vacumm and assembling checks of each component of the satellite which was launched in 2008. Khusboo was also chosen in the group which was to build Chandrayaan 2. This second lunar lest to dispatch in 2009 got deferred and was launched on July 22, 2019. Khusboo was honored by the ISRO Team Excellence Award in April 2015. Ms. Mirza belongs to Chaugori Mohalla, a tiny, traditional Muslim neighbourhood in Amroha district of Uttar Pradesh. Khusboo’s father, an Engineer, died when she was seven. Her mother, Farhat, broke norms to run the family's petrol pump to keep her children in school. Khushboo graduated from Krishna Bal Mandir High School in Amroha. She applied for B. Tech at Aligarh Muslim University and completed her Engineering degree from the Zakir Hussain College of Engineering and Technology, AMU, Aligarh. Besides her scientific achievements, Khusboo was a district level volleyball player. She also became the first girl to fight an election in AMU. Though she did not win, her participation encouraged other girls to take the opportunity in following years. Ms. Mirza started her career as a software engineer at Adobe Systems Incorporated in June 2006 and after working there for 5 months left the lucrative job to join ISRO in November 2006, Khushboo’s mother, Farhat, accompanied her daughter to ISRO training programmes across the country. Mohsina Arif Mirza, is a pioneer in introducing the concept of aviation and flying technology and aerial imaging in schools across the country. Mumtaz M. Kazi, is the first Indian woman to drive a diesel engine train. She is also Asia's first woman locomotive driver. Mumtaz was born and raised up in Mumbai and hails from an orthodox Muslim family. She wanted to follow the footsteps of her father, Allarakhu Ismail Kathwala, who served as an employee in the Indian Railways and pursue a career as a full time train driver. After initial disapprovals Ms. Kazi’s family encouraged her and she applied for a job at the Railways following her graduation from Seth Anandilal Podar High School in Santacruz in 1989.
Mumtaz Kazi was selected for the post of engine driver and in 1991, at the age of 20, started driving a train. Mumtaz has been driving the engines of various types of trains and is currently spearheading local trains along the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminal and Thane route, one of the most congested railway route.
Ms. Kazi has received several awards and recognitions. In 1995 she was recognized by the Limca Book of Records as the first Asian female locomotive driver in 1995. She received Railway General Manager Award in 2015 from the Indian Railways. Ms. Kazi also received the national Nari Shakti Puraskar award from the President of India in 2017.

She has published 250 papers in peer reviewed journals, authored book chapters, delivered several prestigious lectures in India and abroad, guided more than 30 PhD students and over 60 MD, MS and MCh thesis. She is honorary secretary of the Indian College of Pathologists, and has been Member of the College of American Pathologist and the US-Canadian academy of Pathology. She has completed tenures as President of the UP Chapter of IAPM as well as President of the UP Chapter of IAC.
Dr. Husain has created a unique model of public-public partnership and referral services in govt sector. She taken leadership in implementing comprehensive and cost-effective diagnostic services bringing high end investigations like molecular pathology, flow cytometry, e-slides & telepathology, liquid based cytology in the reach of the common public. Research work has been her forte and he has been principal investigator in 20 research extramural projects. She is on the editorial board of several journals and reviewer for articles. On the social front she is active in active in promoting cancer screening in women as well as works for the cause of promoting education and health of underprivileged individuals.

Dr. Sabiha Anwar, is an Educationist and Writer, who served as the Principal of Karamat Husain Muslim Girl's Post-Graduate College, University of Lucknow for 12 years and the Head of the Urdu Department for nearly three decades. She was instrumental in the establishment of the B.Sc., B.Ed and post graduate courses at for Karamat Hussain Girls Degree College during the tenure as Principal. She has supervised PhD thesis of students from India and abroad, such as of student from University of Arizona, USA.
Dr. Anwar is the author of several books and is well known for her short stories. Dr. Anwar’s over one hundred talk shows, interviews have been broadcast from All India Radio and Doordarshan. She has been actively associated with many academic institutions like Aligarh Muslim University, Awadh Girls Degree College, Lucknow University and Uttar Pradesh Urdu Academy. She has been instrumental in promotion of Urdu Language.

Sara Aboobacker, born on June 30, 1936 in Kasargod, Kerala, is a well known Kannada fiction writer. Her stories narrate Muslim lives in the areas bordering Karnataka and Kerala, focusing on the inequities and injustices meted out to women by the male society. Her stories are simple narratives, devoid of linguistic or stylistic adornments, but full of indignation and concern. She has gained immense popularity and recognition by virtue of the fact that she is perhaps the only woman writer to have emerged from the Muslim community in this region and demonstrated immense courage in taking up issues on behalf of the women of her community through her writings. Written in lucid realist style, her works are appreciated not only in Karnataka but also in Kerala where she is widely translated and discussed.
